Silk Thread

A poem from my lockdown

We've all had something to grapple with during this time of confinement. Mine has been boredom.

Poetry has helped me through that. I started writing the jumbled, incoherent words in my head onto paper and somehow they’ve formed into poems.

I also take one photo a day, which I hope when I look back will sit, in some form, alongside the words.

Today, this is what came out. This is the first poem I've put out into the world, so I'd love to hear how it makes you feel.

New rhythms, new threads.
Previously obscured
By twisted branches
Fading light,
And noise.

Blinded by our gardens
Leveling gone wrong
Destroyed by paper notes and coins
Are we really all together?
I want to be.

New rhythms, new threads.
Silk threads.
I watch them unfurl,
Push through, reach out
And catch the evening light.

This thread is strong.
And I hope it finds its way.
From branch to branch,
Window to window
Along new roots, in united silence.

Behind the billowing curtains
Down the deathly streets
Through the choirs of birdsong
And the blossoms’ newfound peace.

Sense the new rhythm
And share the silk thread.
It’s stronger than we know
And it can hold us
In this.
Together.
